Boric Acid

Product Code : SCL372/090

Boric Acid (Product Code: SCL372/090) is a weak acid supplied as an analytical reagent in a 500 gm pack, used to prepare borate buffers such as TBE for DNA gel electrophoresis and to add boron to pollen-germination media. College biotechnology departments and school biology labs use it with the supplied MSDS on file. It is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, India, as a routine buffer ingredient for any gel electrophoresis kit in India.

What Is the Boric Acid Used For?

In the pollen-germination practical, students dust fresh pollen onto a drop of sugar solution containing a trace of boric acid on a cavity slide and watch pollen tubes emerge under the microscope; since boron supports pollen-tube growth, slides with and without it make a simple investigation. In college molecular biology, boric acid is weighed out with the other buffer components, dissolved in distilled water and checked on a pH meter before an electrophoresis run.

Weigh it on a clean, dry balance pan and close the container straight away, as the powder can cake if it absorbs moisture. Although it is only a weak acid, boric acid should never be treated as harmless: avoid swallowing it or inhaling the dust, keep it out of reach of young students, and follow the supplied MSDS for storage and disposal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Boric Acid mainly used for in a biology lab?
Boric Acid is mainly used to prepare borate buffers for gel electrophoresis and to add boron to pollen-germination media. It also serves as a general-purpose weak acid for demonstrations in chemistry teaching.

How much Boric Acid is in one pack?
Each pack contains 500 gm of Boric Acid, listed as an analytical reagent and supplied with an MSDS. Buffer recipes use it by weight, so an accurate balance is needed when preparing solutions from the pack.

Can TBE buffer be made with this Boric Acid?
Yes. Boric Acid is one of the components of TBE (Tris-borate-EDTA) buffer. The Tris and EDTA components are not part of this listing, so contact us if you would like them quoted together with the Boric Acid.

Is Boric Acid safe for school use?
Boric Acid is suitable for supervised laboratory use, but it is harmful if swallowed and its dust should not be inhaled. Read the MSDS supplied with the pack before class and keep it out of reach of young students.

What is the shelf life of Boric Acid?
The shelf life of Boric Acid depends on the chemical, its grade and storage conditions, so no single period is quoted. Ask us for the expiry date of the batch you are quoted, and keep it tightly closed in a dry place to stop caking.

Who supplies Boric Acid for export orders?
Boric Acid is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, India, to institutions and distributors in India and international markets. Share code SCL372/090, your destination and the quantity required for a quotation.
