What Are Magnetic Wands Used For?

Magnetic wands give small hands an easy way to explore what a magnet will and will not pick up. Spread a mix of metallic chips, magnetic marbles and everyday classroom objects on a tray, and let children test each one, sorting the finds into "attracted" and "not attracted" piles. They can then try picking items up through a sheet of paper or the side of a plastic cup, and discover that magnetism works through some materials.

Because every wand in the pack is a different colour, six children or groups can each have their own, which makes turn-taking and group roles simple. Wands also bring counting into science: how many chips can you lift at once, and which wand collected the most? Keep the wands away from computers and bank cards, and store them in their pack after use.
