What Is the Kidney with Adrenal Gland Model Used For?
With the two halves opened on the bench, students trace the route urine takes: from the papillae at the tips of the pyramids into the partially opened renal pelvis and on into the ureter. The contrast between the outer cortex and the inner medulla helps explain where filtration and concentration take place, and the blood vessels show how the kidney receives the blood it filters. The adrenal gland gives teachers a natural bridge from the excretory system to the endocrine system in the same lesson.
The model is used in senior school lessons on excretion, in nursing anatomy practicals and in patient-education discussions about kidney structure, and it is a practical addition for institutions building up biology teaching aids in India. Open and close the halves gently on a flat surface, and store the model in a cabinet between sessions to protect the painted detail.
