What Is Copper Nitrate Used For?
Heating a small amount of copper nitrate in a boiling tube shows the typical decomposition of a transition-metal nitrate: the blue crystals melt, brown nitrogen dioxide is given off, the oxygen released relights a glowing splint and black copper(II) oxide remains. Because nitrogen dioxide is toxic, this demonstration belongs in a fume cupboard.
In solution, copper nitrate gives the familiar blue of hydrated copper ions. Sodium hydroxide produces a pale blue precipitate, excess ammonia solution turns the mixture deep blue, and a piece of zinc or magnesium placed in the solution becomes coated with copper as the colour fades.
