What Is the Agar Block Used For?

Agar is dissolved in boiling water, poured while hot into petri dishes or trays and left to set. In microbiology practicals, nutrients are added before pouring so the plates can grow bacteria and fungi from air, soil or unwashed and washed hands — a simple way to show why hygiene matters. For diffusion experiments, agar set with an indicator is cut into cubes of different sizes and placed in a solution that changes the indicator's colour; timing how fast the colour reaches the centre shows the effect of surface area to volume ratio. Plant physiology classes also use small agar blocks to show how growth substances move from a shoot tip.

Weigh the agar accurately, sprinkle it into the water while stirring to avoid lumps, and keep heating until the liquid turns completely clear. Let it cool until the flask can be held before pouring, and for culture work follow your institution's biosafety rules, sealing plates once inoculated. Keep the pack tightly closed in a cool, dry place, because agar picks up moisture from the air.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much agar is in one Agar Block pack?
Each Agar Block pack contains 500 gm of agar, listed as an analytical reagent. Only a modest amount is weighed out for each batch of gel or medium, so one pack supports repeated plate pouring and diffusion practicals.

Is the Agar Block a ready-to-use culture medium?
No. The Agar Block is the gelling agent only. To grow bacteria or fungi, nutrients must be added before the agar is poured into petri dishes; plain agar gels are used for diffusion and plant physiology demonstrations.

Why does the Agar Block not dissolve in cold water?
Agar from the Agar Block needs to be heated to boiling with steady stirring before it dissolves completely. Once the liquid turns clear it can be cooled slightly and poured, and it sets again into a firm gel as it cools.

How should the Agar Block be stored, and how long does it keep?
Store the Agar Block sealed in a cool, dry place, because agar absorbs moisture. Its shelf life depends on the material, its grade and storage conditions, so ask us for the expiry date of the batch you are quoted.

Who supplies the Agar Block?
The Agar Block is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, India, with an MSDS. For gel-strength or purity figures required by a syllabus or tender, contact us before ordering so we can confirm the details.

Can ScienceLab supply several Agar Block packs for a college or export order?
Yes. Share code SCL360/081, the number of Agar Block packs and the delivery destination, and ScienceLab will quote for colleges, schools and distributors in India and international markets.
