Solution Fehling A (Product Code: SCL374/087) is the blue copper(II) sulfate half of Fehling’s reagent, used with Fehling B to test for reducing sugars and aldehydes in biology and chemistry laboratories. Teachers stock it in a 250 ml bottle of analytical reagent grade with an MSDS and pair it with Fehling B to make up a complete Fehling solution kit. It is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, India.

Fehling A is never used on its own. Just before a test, equal volumes of Fehling A and Fehling B are mixed to give a deep blue solution, which is added to the sample in a test tube and heated in a boiling water bath. A reducing sugar such as glucose turns the mixture green, then yellow-orange, and finally a brick-red precipitate of copper(I) oxide forms, while sucrose stays blue unless it is first hydrolysed.
In chemistry, the same reaction separates aldehydes, which reduce the copper, from ketones, which generally do not. Copper salt solutions are harmful if swallowed and irritate eyes and skin, so wear goggles, heat tubes in a water bath rather than a direct flame, and dispose of copper-containing residues as the MSDS advises.
Jain Scientific Equipments Private Limited, trading as ScienceLab, supplies Solution Fehling A from Ambala, Haryana, as a sourced analytical reagent. Because both halves of the reagent are listed, a school can order Fehling A and Fehling B together with test tubes and a water bath from one supplier. What is Solution Fehling A?
Solution Fehling A (SCL374/087) is the copper(II) sulfate component of Fehling’s reagent. It is mixed with Solution Fehling B just before use to test for reducing sugars and aldehydes, giving a brick-red precipitate when the test is positive.
Do I need Fehling B as well as Solution Fehling A?
Yes. Solution Fehling A cannot perform the test on its own; it must be mixed with Fehling B, the alkaline tartrate solution, immediately before testing. Order both bottles together, usually in equal numbers, so your practical is not held up.
What size bottle is Solution Fehling A?
Solution Fehling A is supplied in a 250 ml bottle of analytical reagent grade, together with an MSDS. Tell us how many bottles each lab needs, and we can include matching Fehling B in the same quotation.
Why are Fehling A and B stored separately?
Solution Fehling A is kept apart from Fehling B because the mixed deep-blue reagent does not keep well. Storing the two solutions separately and mixing small volumes just before each test gives more reliable results in class.
What is the shelf life of Solution Fehling A?
The shelf life of Solution Fehling A depends on the chemical, its grade and storage conditions, so no fixed period is quoted. Ask us for the expiry date of the batch you are quoted, and keep the bottle capped and out of sunlight.
Who supplies Solution Fehling A?
Solution Fehling A is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, Haryana, India. The company sources food-test reagents and supplies them with glassware and heating apparatus to schools, colleges, dealers and importers in India and international markets.
