Typical Use
The four finger design is chosen when a three-prong clamp is too small or too narrow to hold the load safely: large round-bottom or distillation flasks, wide-necked bottles and gas-generating vessels that carry extra weight once filled. Four contact points hold the vessel squarely, so it is less likely to rotate in the jaws when tubing or a stopper is pushed into the neck.
Fit the 8 mm stem into a boss head on the stand rod — the usual lab stand, clamp and boss head combination — and set the height before the vessel is loaded. Cork lining gives a firm, slightly yielding contact on glass; turn the tommy bar until the cork just bites, and check again once the flask warms up. Keep the cork dry between sessions so it does not harden or crumble.
