Resonance Tube Apparatus (Product Code: SCL-298/047) is a closed-pipe resonance set-up used to find the speed of sound in air with a tuning fork in school and college physics laboratories. It is built around a 25 mm stainless steel (S.S.) pipe, and students use it in the resonance tube experiment to locate the first and second resonance positions of an air column. It is made by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), an OEM manufacturer, at its own factory in Ambala, India.

The apparatus turns the pipe into an air column closed at the bottom by water and open at the top. A sounding tuning fork is held just above the open end while the length of the air column is slowly changed; at certain lengths the sound suddenly becomes much louder, which is resonance. The first resonance occurs at roughly a quarter wavelength and the second at three quarters, so the speed of sound equals twice the fork frequency multiplied by the difference between the two resonance lengths.
Hold the fork horizontally over the mouth of the tube without touching it, approach each resonance position slowly from above and below, and take several readings with more than one fork. Note the room temperature, because the speed of sound in air rises with temperature. The stainless steel pipe resists rust from the water used in the experiment, but drain and dry it after each session.
The Resonance Tube Apparatus is produced by ScienceLab, the brand of Jain Scientific Equipments Private Limited, which is the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and makes it at its own licensed factory at Saha, Ambala, Haryana, India. Ordering from the maker means the stainless steel pipe apparatus, the forks and other sound-practical items can be quoted together, and questions about spare parts go directly to the manufacturer; ask us. Institutions, dealers and importers are all quoted factory-direct. Company details are on the ScienceLab profile page.
These items are used with the Resonance Tube Apparatus to complete the speed-of-sound practical:

What is the pipe of the Resonance Tube Apparatus made of?
The Resonance Tube Apparatus (code SCL-298/047) uses a 25 mm stainless steel (S.S.) pipe. Stainless steel resists rusting from the water that closes the air column, which helps the apparatus last through repeated practical sessions.
How is the speed of sound found with the Resonance Tube Apparatus?
With the Resonance Tube Apparatus, students find the first and second resonance lengths for a tuning fork of known frequency. The speed of sound in air equals twice the fork frequency multiplied by the difference between those two lengths.
What is end correction in the Resonance Tube Apparatus experiment?
End correction allows for the sound antinode forming slightly above the open end of the Resonance Tube Apparatus. Using the difference between the first and second resonance lengths cancels it, and it can also be estimated from the tube's internal radius.
Which tuning forks suit the Resonance Tube Apparatus?
Choose forks for the Resonance Tube Apparatus whose resonance lengths fall within the usable length of the tube; higher frequencies give shorter lengths. Ask us through the contact page for the tube length before selecting forks.
Are tuning forks included with the Resonance Tube Apparatus?
Tuning forks are listed separately from the Resonance Tube Apparatus, for example as the eight-fork Tuning Fork Set. Add them to the same enquiry, and we will confirm in the quotation exactly what comes with the apparatus.
Who manufactures the Resonance Tube Apparatus?
Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd, trading as ScienceLab, manufactures the Resonance Tube Apparatus as the OEM at its own factory in Saha, Ambala, Haryana, India, and supplies it factory-direct to institutions and dealers in India and international markets.
To price the Resonance Tube Apparatus, contact us via the contact page or add it to the enquiry cart with any forks you need. You will receive a quotation directly from the manufacturer.
