What Is Potassium Hydroxide Used For?
In plant and seed respiration experiments, a small container of potassium hydroxide solution inside a sealed flask absorbs the carbon dioxide given off, so a coloured liquid index in the attached tube moves as oxygen is taken up. The same property lets teachers remove carbon dioxide from the air around a leaf to show that photosynthesis depends on it, which keeps caustic potash on most biology lab equipment lists in India as well as in chemistry stores.
In chemistry, potassium hydroxide saponifies oils to give soft, liquid potassium soap, acts as the electrolyte in alkaline cells and serves as a strong base in titrations and organic reactions.
