What Is Phenolphthalein Used For?
Phenolphthalein is the indicator of choice when a strong alkali such as sodium hydroxide is titrated against an acid: a few drops in the conical flask stay colourless until the final drop of alkali tips the solution to a permanent pale pink. It is especially suited to weak acid and strong base titrations, such as ethanoic acid against sodium hydroxide, where methyl orange would change colour too early. Teachers also use it in “invisible ink” demonstrations and to show that limewater and soap solutions are alkaline.
Add only two or three drops per titration, because the indicator is itself a weak acid and an excess can shift the end point slightly. Keep the bottle closed, away from strong light and alkalis, and file the MSDS with your chemical register so every user has the handling information.
