What Is Phenol Red Indicator Used For?
For the urea test, a few drops of phenol red are added to the urine sample, which usually shows a yellow to orange tint. After urease is added, the enzyme releases ammonia from any urea present and the colour deepens to red and then pink as the mixture becomes alkaline. Setting up an indicator-only blank and a known urea standard beside each sample helps students judge the change fairly and stops a naturally alkaline sample from being misread.

Because dissolved carbon dioxide makes water more acidic, phenol red turns from red towards yellow when students breathe into it, and it can show carbon dioxide uptake by aquatic plants in light as the water drifts back towards red.
