What Is n-Hexane Used For?
Because it mixes with oils and fats but not with water, n-hexane is used to extract oil from crushed seeds and to pull non-polar compounds out of aqueous mixtures in a separating funnel, where it forms the upper layer. In thin-layer and paper chromatography it serves as the non-polar part of the mobile phase, letting students see how solvent polarity changes how far pigments or dyes travel, a common step when a chromatography kit is used in school or college.
It is also the solvent of choice for showing that iodine dissolves in non-polar liquids with a violet colour while barely dissolving in water, and for halogen displacement tests in which the colour of the organic layer reveals the halogen present. n-Hexane is highly flammable and its vapour is heavier than air, so use it only in a fume cupboard with no flames or hot plates nearby.
