Mini Science Kit – Light and Shadows

Product Code : SLE/CH/162

Mini Science Kit – Light and Shadows (Product Code: SLE/CH/162) turns the playground and the classroom into a light laboratory. Pupils find out how shadows are formed and how they can be changed, track shadows through the day, use them as evidence that the Earth spins on its axis, test which surfaces reflect light well, explore mirrors and sort materials by whether they let light through. Manufactured by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, India, it is an optics experiment kit for school lessons that combine indoor tests with outdoor observation.

Activities performed with this kit:

  • How are shadows formed?
  • How do shadows change throughout the day?
  • How do we know the Earth spins on its axis?
  • Which surfaces reflect light the best?
  • Does the Sun shine from the same direction at the same time each day?
  • Do all materials let light through?
  • What can you see with a mirror?
  • How can a shadow change?

Typical Use

Indoors, pupils block a beam of light with different objects to see that a shadow forms wherever light cannot pass, then move the object or the light to make the shadow bigger, smaller or a different shape. They hold materials up to the light and group them as letting light through, letting some through or blocking it, and compare how well shiny and dull surfaces reflect. Mirror activities reveal how reflection lets us see round corners or behind us.

Outdoors, a shadow marked on the ground every hour shows its length and direction changing as the day goes on – evidence that the Earth is turning. Repeating the observation at the same time on different days answers whether the Sun shines from the same direction each day. Remind pupils never to look straight at the Sun or reflect sunlight into anyone’s eyes with a mirror.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can all the activities be done indoors?
Most can, using a lamp or torch. The activities on daily shadow changes, the Earth’s rotation and the Sun’s direction need outdoor observations on a sunny day.

How does a shadow show that the Earth spins?
As the Earth rotates, the Sun appears to move across the sky, so a shadow cast by a fixed object slowly changes direction and length through the day.

How are materials classified in the light-through activity?
Pupils sort them into transparent (light passes through), translucent (some light passes) and opaque (light is blocked, forming a shadow).

Are mirrors safe for children to handle?
Handle glass mirrors with care, hold them by the edges and store them flat. Never use a mirror to reflect sunlight towards someone’s face.
