What Is Methyl Violet Used For?
In microscopy practicals, a dilute methyl violet solution stains nuclei, bacteria and other structures so they stand out against a clear background, and closely related violet dyes serve as the first stain in the Gram procedure. Students place a drop on a fixed smear or thin section, wait briefly, rinse off the excess with water and examine the slide. Prepare small working volumes and keep the stock container closed between sessions.
Chemistry teachers also use methyl violet as an indicator for very acidic solutions, where it shifts from yellow through green to violet as acidity falls – a useful contrast with phenolphthalein and methyl orange in an acid base indicator kit.
