What Is Methanoic (Formic) Acid Used For?
Methanoic acid behaves both as an acid and as a reducing agent, which sets it apart from the other carboxylic acids. Students see it fizz with sodium carbonate like any acid, yet it also forms a silver mirror with Tollens' reagent and decolourises acidified potassium permanganate — tests that ethanoic acid does not pass.
