Key Details

What Is the Loose Ethmoid Bone Used For?

In an assembled skull the ethmoid is almost out of sight, tucked between the eye sockets behind the nose, so students usually see only a thin strip of it in the orbit wall. Holding it as a loose bone changes that. A student can turn it in the hand and look for the parts every anatomy course names: the horizontal cribriform plate, the crista galli rising above it, the perpendicular plate that forms the upper nasal septum, and the labyrinths on either side that contain the ethmoidal air cells and carry the superior and middle nasal conchae.

Teachers use it to explain how smell reaches the brain through the cribriform plate, how the nasal septum is built, and why the ethmoidal sinuses matter to ENT and dental students. Keep a label card next to it during practicals, and store it in a small closed box so it is not mislaid among larger models. For departments comparing anatomical model manufacturers in India, a single cast bone like this is a practical way to fill a gap that complete skulls leave.
