What Is the Ingen-Hausz Apparatus Used For?
Ingen-Hausz's experiment is the classic way to show that metals conduct heat at different rates. Each rod is given a thin, even coat of paraffin wax, hot water is placed in the tank, and heat flows up the rods from their lower ends. The wax softens and melts furthest along the better conductors, so copper and aluminium usually show the longest melted lengths while lead shows the shortest.
For a fair comparison, coat all six rods to the same thickness and leave the set undisturbed until the melt lines stop moving. Senior students can measure each melted length with a ruler and use the relation that, in the steady state, the square of the melted length is proportional to the thermal conductivity. It fits neatly into a secondary or senior-secondary heat practical on conduction.
