What Is the Spring Testing Apparatus Used For?
The method is deliberately simple. Level the frame with its feet, hang a spring in the slot and note its starting position on the scale, then add masses one at a time and read the new position after each. Plotting the load against the extension gives a straight line for as long as the spring behaves elastically — Hooke's law — and the slope of that line is the spring rate, the force needed for each unit of stretch.
