Typical Use

Students fill the water collector at the edge of a pond or from a stream, let the sample settle in the plastic Petri dish, and scan it first with the magnifying glass to spot larger organisms and clumps of algae. A drop taken with the dropper is placed on a slide, covered with a cover slip and viewed under the 400x monocular microscope, where protozoa, algae and small invertebrates such as water fleas become visible.

Because the kit carries 200 cover slips for 50 slides, fragile cover slips can be replaced freely while slides are cleaned and reused. For an environmental science lesson, compare samples from still and running water, or from clean and polluted sites, and record which organisms appear. Rinse slides and the dish in clean water after use and let them dry before packing.
