Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose)

Product Code : SCL384/0100

Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) (Product Code: SCL384/0100) is the alkaline half of Fehling's reagent, used with Fehling's Solution A to test for reducing sugars and, after hydrolysis, sucrose in school and college laboratories. Packed as 500 ml of analytical reagent with its MSDS, it provides the alkali and tartrate that hold copper in solution during the test. It is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, a chemistry consumables supplier in India for schools and colleges.

What Is Fehling's Solution B Used For?

Fehling's Solution B is conventionally an alkaline solution of potassium sodium tartrate (Rochelle salt). On its own it is colourless and does nothing visible; its job begins when it meets Solution A. The tartrate binds the copper ions into a soluble deep-blue complex, and the alkali creates the conditions in which a reducing sugar can reduce that copper to red copper(I) oxide on heating. Students measure out matching volumes of A and B, mix them fresh, add the sample and heat.

Because Solution B is strongly alkaline, it is the more hazardous of the pair to handle: wear goggles and gloves, and rinse any splash with plenty of water. Keep the bottle tightly closed so the alkali does not absorb carbon dioxide, and prefer a plastic or rubber closure, since alkaline solutions can make ground-glass stoppers seize. It belongs on the reagent shelf of school chemistry lab equipment in India used for food and sugar testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) do in the test?
Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) supplies the alkali and the tartrate. The tartrate keeps copper from Solution A dissolved as a deep-blue complex, and the alkaline conditions allow reducing sugars to reduce that copper to a red precipitate when heated.

Is Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) hazardous?
Yes, Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) is strongly alkaline and can damage skin and eyes, making it the more hazardous half of the pair. Use goggles and gloves, rinse splashes with plenty of water and follow the MSDS supplied with the pack.

How is Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) different from Benedict's reagent?
Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) is one of two separately stored solutions, whereas Benedict's reagent is a single, milder solution. Both detect reducing sugars, but Fehling's needs Solutions A and B mixed fresh in equal volumes for each test.

Which sugars give a positive result with Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose)?
Mixed with Solution A, Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) gives a positive result with reducing sugars such as glucose, fructose, maltose and lactose. Sucrose reacts only after it has been hydrolysed with dilute acid and the acid neutralised.

How long does Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) keep?
The shelf life of Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) depends on the chemical, its grade and storage conditions; ask us for the expiry date of the batch you are quoted. Keep it tightly closed so the alkali does not absorb carbon dioxide.

Who supplies Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose)?
Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd, which trades as ScienceLab from Ambala, Haryana, India. The company provides it in 500 ml packs to schools, colleges and distributors in India and international markets, usually together with Solution A.

What documents come with Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose)?
The MSDS is supplied with Fehling's SOL B (TEST OF Sucrose) as standard. For any other paperwork your institution needs, ask through our contact page when requesting a quotation, and we will tell you what can be provided.
