Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose)

Product Code : SCL383/099

Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) (Product Code: SCL383/099) is the copper-containing half of Fehling's reagent, used with Fehling's Solution B to detect reducing sugars and, after acid hydrolysis, sucrose in school and college food-test practicals. It comes as an analytical reagent in a 500 ml pack with its MSDS, one half of the Fehling solution kit India's biology labs usually order as a pair. It is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, India.

What Is Fehling's Solution A Used For?

Equal volumes of Solution A and Solution B are mixed in a test tube to give a deep blue working reagent, the sample is added and the tube is heated in a boiling water bath. A reducing sugar such as glucose converts the blue copper complex into a brick-red precipitate of copper(I) oxide. Sucrose, however, is a non-reducing sugar and leaves the mixture blue.

To test for sucrose, students first boil the sample with dilute hydrochloric acid to split it into glucose and fructose, neutralise the acid, and then repeat the Fehling's test; a red precipitate that appears only after hydrolysis points to sucrose. Running untreated and hydrolysed samples side by side, with glucose as a positive control, makes the comparison clear. Solution A contains copper salts, so wear goggles and gloves and collect waste rather than washing it away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) be used on its own?
No, Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) must be mixed with Fehling's Solution B immediately before use. Neither solution works as a sugar test alone; the blue working reagent forms only when the copper solution meets the alkaline tartrate solution.

How does Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) detect sucrose if sucrose is non-reducing?
Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) detects sucrose by comparison: an untreated sucrose sample stays blue, while the same sample boiled with dilute acid and neutralised gives a red precipitate, because hydrolysis releases the reducing sugars glucose and fructose.

Why are the two halves of Fehling's reagent kept separate?
The two halves are kept separate because mixed Fehling's reagent does not keep well. Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) and Solution B are therefore stored in their own bottles and combined fresh, in equal volumes, for each practical session.

How much solution does a pack of Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) contain?
A pack of Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) contains 500 ml of analytical reagent grade solution with its MSDS. Order the same volume of Solution B, since the two halves are mixed in equal parts for every test.

How long does Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) keep?
The shelf life of Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) depends on the chemical, its grade and storage conditions; ask us for the expiry date of the batch you are quoted. Keep the bottle capped and store it as the MSDS advises.

Who supplies Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose)?
Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd, trading as ScienceLab, from Ambala, Haryana, India. Schools, colleges and distributors in India and international markets can order it with Solution B, sugars and test tubes in one quotation.

Should Solution B be ordered with Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose)?
Yes, order Solution B with Fehling's Sol A (Test Of Sucrose) if you do not already have it. Add both to the enquiry cart, quoting code SCL383/099 for Solution A, so the pair is priced and dispatched together.
