Fast Green (Proteins) (Product Code: SCL453/0136) is a green acid dye used to counterstain protein-rich and cellulose-walled plant tissue in section-staining practicals. Botany classes pair it with safranine so that thin-walled tissue shows green against red lignified walls, and it is packed as 100 ml of analytical reagent grade stain with an MSDS. It is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, India, alongside the rest of its botany lab equipment.

The double-staining practical in plant anatomy is where most students meet fast green. A thin transverse section of a dicot or monocot stem is cut with a razor, stained in safranine and rinsed, then dipped very briefly in fast green before a second rinse and mounting in glycerine. Lignified tissues such as xylem and sclerenchyma keep the red of safranine, while parenchyma, phloem and other thin-walled cellulose tissues take up the green, so the vascular bundles stand out sharply for drawing and labelling.
Fast green works quickly and can easily overpower the red, so a short dip is enough and it helps to test the timing on a spare section first. In higher classes the dye's affinity for proteins is also used in cell and protein staining exercises, which is why it is listed here for proteins. Pour only what is needed into a watch glass, return nothing to the stock bottle, and rinse the section well so excess dye does not cloud the mount.

What size is a pack of Fast Green (Proteins)?
Each pack of Fast Green (Proteins) contains 100 ml of analytical reagent grade stain and is supplied with an MSDS. Because only brief dips are needed in section staining, the small pack goes a long way in a plant anatomy practical.
Can Fast Green (Proteins) be used without safranine?
Yes, Fast Green (Proteins) can stain on its own, but the classic contrast between lignified and non-lignified plant tissue needs both dyes. Most plant anatomy practicals therefore use safranine first and fast green as the counterstain.
Why do my sections look completely green?
Sections turn completely green when they stay too long in Fast Green (Proteins), which can displace the red safranine. Reduce the dip to a brief immersion, rinse promptly, and test the timing on a spare section before staining the class set.
What is the shelf life of Fast Green (Proteins)?
Shelf life depends on the chemical, its grade and storage conditions, so no blanket period is stated for Fast Green (Proteins). Ask us for the expiry date of the batch you are quoted, and keep the bottle closed, away from strong light and heat.
Who supplies Fast Green (Proteins)?
Fast Green (Proteins) is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, Haryana, India. The company can quote it with safranine, glycerine, watch glasses and coverslips, so a complete double-staining practical can be ordered in one enquiry.
Can you supply this stain in quantity for schools or distributors?
