Ether (Product Code: SCL437/0125) is a volatile organic solvent, in teaching labs normally diethyl ether, used to dissolve fats and oils in lipid solubility tests during biology practicals. Supplied in a 500 ml pack of analytical reagent grade, it also appears in some genetics courses for briefly immobilising fruit flies, and it is dispatched with an MSDS because of its fire hazard. It is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, India, a chemistry consumables supplier to schools and colleges.

The most common school use is the solubility test for lipids. Students shake a little oil or fat with water in one tube and with ether in another; the fat stays as a separate layer in water but disappears into the ether. Placing a drop of the ether extract on paper and letting it evaporate leaves a translucent grease spot, confirming that the dissolved material is a lipid. Ether is also used to extract fats from crushed seeds and, in some genetics courses, to anaesthetise Drosophila for sorting, although many teachers now prefer other methods for that step.
Ether is extremely flammable and its vapour is heavier than air, so it can travel along the bench to a flame. Work with no spirit lamps or burners lit in the room, use it in a fume cupboard or near an open window, and dispense only the small volume each group needs. Once a bottle is opened, write the opening date on the label: ether can form hazardous peroxides with prolonged exposure to air and light, so opened stock should be used promptly and stored cool, dark and tightly sealed.
Ether is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Private Limited, the company behind the ScienceLab brand in Ambala, Haryana. It provides laboratory reagents together with glassware and apparatus to schools, colleges, training institutes and laboratories in India and international markets. Our company profile gives an overview of the organisation.

What quantity and grade of Ether is supplied?
Each pack of Ether holds 500 ml of analytical reagent grade solvent and comes with an MSDS. If your syllabus names a particular type of ether, ask us through the contact page and we will confirm what this pack contains.
Can Ether be used in a room with spirit lamps?
No. Ether vapour ignites very easily and, being heavier than air, can travel along a bench to a flame some distance away, so put out every spirit lamp and burner in the room before the bottle is opened.
What is the shelf life of Ether?
The shelf life of Ether depends on the chemical, its grade and storage conditions, so no blanket period is quoted; ask us for the expiry date of the batch you are quoted. Date opened bottles and use them promptly, because peroxides can build up after air exposure.
How should Ether be stored in a school lab?
Store Ether in a cool, dark, well-ventilated cupboard for flammable liquids, tightly capped and away from oxidisers, heat sources and direct sunlight, and dispose of old opened stock through the school's safety officer as the MSDS advises.
Can Ether be shipped to our location?
Ether is a flammable solvent that needs special transport arrangements. It is supplied to institutions in India and international markets; share your address and the number of 500 ml packs, and dispatch options will be confirmed with the quotation.
Who supplies Ether?
Ether is supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, Haryana, India, which sources reagents and glassware for school and college practicals so that lipid tests, stains and solvents can be ordered together.
Is batch documentation available for Ether beyond the MSDS?
Ether ships with an MSDS. Please discuss any further documentation, such as batch analysis details, with us before ordering so we can tell you what the current batch of this solvent can include.
For an Ether quotation, share the number of 500 ml packs and your delivery location on our contact page, or add it to the enquiry cart with the other reagents on your list.
