Coverslips (Product Code: SCL1365/023) are thin 18 x 18 mm glass squares placed over a specimen on a microscope slide to keep solid material pressed flat and to spread liquid samples into a flat layer of even thickness. Students and technicians use them on every wet mount, stained preparation and hanging drop, so they are among the first items in a microscopy starter kit for schools. They are supplied by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, India.

Once a drop of water, glycerine or stain has been placed on the specimen, the coverslip is touched to the slide at an angle and lowered slowly with a needle, so that air is pushed out rather than trapped as bubbles. Excess liquid at the edges is drawn off with a strip of blotting paper. The even layer this creates lets the objective focus across the whole field, and the glass also keeps stains and water off the lens.
In the hanging-drop method the coverslip carries the drop over the well of a cavity slide. Because coverslips are very thin, handle them by the edges or with forceps, keep them in their container until needed, and clean them with alcohol before use for the clearest view.
Jain Scientific Equipments Private Limited, known by its trading name ScienceLab, supplies these coverslips from Ambala, Haryana, as part of the slides, stains and microscopy consumables it provides to schools, colleges, laboratories and dealers in India and international markets. What size are the Coverslips?
The Coverslips are 18 x 18 mm squares of glass. That size covers a typical onion-peel, cheek-cell or root-tip preparation on a standard microscope slide while leaving room at the ends of the slide for a label.
What thickness are the Coverslips?
The thickness of the Coverslips is not specified in their product details. If your microscope objectives call for a particular coverslip thickness, confirm it with ScienceLab through the contact page before placing the order.
How do you avoid air bubbles under the Coverslips?
Touch one edge of the Coverslips to the liquid first and lower each one slowly with a needle or forceps. The liquid then spreads outward across the specimen and pushes the air out ahead of it, leaving a clear, bubble-free mount.
Can the Coverslips be reused?
The Coverslips can be cleaned carefully with alcohol and reused, but most laboratories treat them as consumables because the thin glass breaks easily. Put broken pieces in a glass waste container rather than an ordinary bin.
How many Coverslips come in a pack?
The pack quantity of the Coverslips is not listed on this page. Please ask when requesting a quotation, and mention how many slides your classes prepare so that ScienceLab can suggest a sensible order quantity.
