Typical Use

Slide out the glass front, stand a small lit candle (not listed among the contents) beneath one chimney and refit the glass. Light a piece of touch paper, blow it out so it smoulders, and hold it just above the second chimney. The smoke is drawn down that chimney, travels across the box and rises out through the chimney above the flame, drawing a visible loop of circulating air. The glass front lets the whole class follow the smoke path inside the box.

The demonstration explains everyday effects such as sea breezes, room ventilation, chimney draught and why heaters are placed low and air-conditioners high. Ask students to predict what will happen if the candle is moved under the other chimney, then test it. Carry out the activity in a well-ventilated room with a heat-resistant mat under the box, and let the metal cool before handling.
