Complete Zeeman Effect Apparatus (Product Code: SLE/EM/10) is an integrated bench system for observing the Zeeman effect — the splitting of an atomic spectral line when the emitting atoms are placed in a strong magnetic field. A slim mercury discharge lamp sits between the poles of a built-in, current-controlled electromagnet that reaches up to 1.3 T at the lamp position; the 546.1 nm emission line is isolated by an interference filter, collimated by a lens and resolved with a Fabry-Pérot etalon so that the splitting can be seen and measured. Manufactured by Jain Scientific Equipments Pvt Ltd (ScienceLab), Ambala, a physics instruments supplier in India, it is intended for university and college modern-physics and spectroscopy laboratories.

With the field off, the etalon shows a set of sharp interference rings from the single mercury line. As the magnet current is raised, each ring splits into components whose separation grows with the field. Viewing across the field (transverse) and along it (longitudinal) — made possible by rotating the magnet through 90° — lets students compare the patterns seen in the two directions and relate them to angular-momentum selection rules. Measuring ring diameters at several magnet currents gives the energy splitting as a function of field, from which the Bohr magneton or the specific charge of the electron can be estimated.
Let the lamp stabilise before recording data, raise the magnet current gradually while noting the ammeter reading, and work in a darkened room for the clearest rings. Handle the etalon, filter and lens only by their mounts and keep their optical surfaces covered when not in use. Because it combines a precision etalon with collimating optics, the system also serves the interferometry side of optics lab equipment in India’s postgraduate departments.

Which spectral line is observed?
The 546.1 nm line of the mercury lamp, isolated by an interference filter centred on 546.1 nm with a transmission bandwidth of 10 nm or less.
How strong is the magnetic field?
Up to 1.3 T at the lamp position, set by the built-in current-controlled supply (90-V DC, 0.5 to 1.4 A) and read on its analog ammeter.
Can both transverse and longitudinal observations be made?
Yes. The magnet rotates through 90° so the line can be viewed across the field or along it.
What mains supply does it use?
The listed power input is 110-V AC, 60 Hz, 190 W. Please contact us to confirm the configuration for your local supply before placing an order.
How much space should we allow?
The system measures 2 x 0.75 m and weighs 36.4 kg, so plan for a sturdy, dedicated bench away from vibration.
What environment does it need?
Operation is specified from 0 to 40 °C at 35% to 80% humidity.
Are installation support, warranty or test documents provided?
These details are not in our current listing. Please discuss your installation, warranty and documentation requirements with us through the contact page.
Do you supply universities outside India?
Yes. We supply institutions in India and international markets; include your delivery location in the enquiry.
