What Is Butanol Used For?
Burned in a spirit burner beneath a copper calorimeter, butanol raises the water temperature more per gram of fuel than methanol or ethanol, letting students link energy of combustion to chain length. It only partly mixes with water, unlike ethanol, which shows how a longer carbon chain lowers solubility. Warmed with acidified potassium dichromate it turns the orange solution green, the test for a primary alcohol, and with ethanoic acid and a few drops of concentrated sulfuric acid it forms the fruity-smelling ester butyl ethanoate.
Mixed with ethanoic acid and water, butanol makes the classic running solvent for separating amino acids on paper, which is why it belongs in a paper chromatography kit for school or college biology. It is a flammable liquid with a strong odour, so use it in a well-ventilated room away from flames, wear goggles, and keep the bottle capped.
