Typical Use

The funnel is pushed into a rubber bung seated in the neck of a filter flask, and the flask’s side arm is connected to a vacuum pump or water aspirator with thick-walled tubing. A filter paper is laid flat on the perforated platform so that it covers every hole without curling up the sides, wetted with a little solvent to seal it, and the vacuum is switched on before the mixture is poured in. This is the standard way to collect product after a crystallisation, wash it with cold solvent and draw air through the cake to dry it.

Because 11 cm filter paper is larger than the 90 mm platform, trim each circle to size before use. When the filtration is finished, release the vacuum at the flask before switching off the pump to avoid suck-back. Porcelain resists acids and alkalis and can be autoclaved, so the funnel can be cleaned thoroughly and reused over many sessions.
