Typical Use

A burette that is not properly clean holds droplets on its inner wall, which spoils the meniscus reading and the accuracy of a titration. After a practical, drain the burette, fill it partly with warm water and a little laboratory detergent, and slide the brush in from the top. Work it gently up and down along the graduated section, then rinse several times with tap water and finally with distilled water. When water drains from the wall in an even film without forming beads, the burette is ready to be rinsed with titrant and used again.

The long wire handle lets you reach the lower end without forcing the brush, but stop short of the stopcock and jet so the wire tip does not scratch the bore or dislodge a plug. In busy school titration sessions it helps to keep one brush beside each sink, and to hang it bristle-end down after use so water drains away from the wire.
