What Is the Biuret Reagent Used For?
The biuret test needs no heating: add the reagent to the sample in a test tube, shake gently and wait briefly. Copper ions in the alkaline reagent bind to peptide bonds, and the pale blue mixture turns violet or purple if protein is present. Egg white, milk and extracts of pulses or germinating seeds give clear positives, so a class can compare protein-rich and starch-rich foods in the same lesson or follow protein digestion in an enzyme experiment.
