What Is the Bar and Gauge Apparatus Used For?
The demonstration takes a few minutes and needs only a flame. At room temperature, students check that the bar slides lengthways into the cut-out and passes endways through the hole. The bar is then heated in a burner flame and tried again: it no longer enters either opening, showing that both its length and its diameter have increased. As it cools, or is dipped in cold water, it fits once more, proving the change is reversible.
