What Is Ammonium Hydroxide Used For?
In qualitative analysis, dilute ammonium hydroxide added drop by drop to a metal salt solution identifies cations by their precipitates: copper ions give a pale blue precipitate that dissolves in excess to a deep blue solution, while iron(III) ions give a rust-brown one. It also neutralises acids gently, which makes it useful for adjusting pH and for weak-base titrations with methyl orange as the indicator.
For a memorable diffusion demonstration, cotton wool soaked in ammonia water and in hydrochloric acid is placed at opposite ends of a glass tube; a white ring of ammonium chloride forms nearer the acid end, because ammonia molecules are lighter and move faster.
