What Is Ammonium Carbonate Used For?
In the classic cation scheme, ammonium carbonate is added after ammonium chloride and ammonium hydroxide; barium, strontium and calcium then come down as white carbonate precipitates, while magnesium stays in solution because of the ammonium buffer. The precipitate is dissolved in acetic acid, and the individual ions are confirmed with further reagents and flame colours. This step is the heart of the Group V separation that students practise in senior practical examinations.
Warm a little of the solid in a dry test tube and it disappears almost completely, breaking down into ammonia, carbon dioxide and water vapour. Moist red litmus turns blue and limewater turns milky, identifying two of the gases in one experiment. Because it loses ammonia slowly even at room temperature, keep the bottle tightly stoppered in a cool place and prepare reagent solution freshly when accuracy matters.
